• 5.0 out of 5 stars from Waters -- A big fan of Lewis for years : I read many of his novel. Godseeker, Main Street, Arrowsmith, Babbit , It can't happen here, etc. This book moved me. As a black man, I found this book disturbing because it felt too read. The state of things now in this country and across the world...it is happening here and there. Not just to black but to other minorities. Truth and fiction. I recommend this book, as well as his others. ( Reviewed in the United States on December 30, 2019 )
• 4.0 out of 5 stars from Ted d'Afflisio -- Kingsblood Royal : Though many might consider this one of his minor works, the fact is it is a forward looking book examining the intricacies of racism, it’s vapidity and its unmoored from reality nature. The fonts size and the line spacing every few pages change, making it extremely distracting to read. I would say this is the WORST digital version of a book I have ever seen. B. -- Things haven't changed as much as we would like to think : Neil Kingsblood is an affluent white male who recently returned to the mythical town of Grand Republic, Minnesota after being wounded in World War II. After he settles into his predictable life of a rising bank executive, he is asked by his father, who believes that they have distant relatives in the English royal family, to research his genealogy. Instead Neil learns that his ancestor, thought to be a French voyager, was actually black, which makes him 1/32 black. He keeps the news from his family as he strives to learn more about the black society in his community, something completely alien to his upbringing and worldview. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Donald S. Handy -- Should Be Required Reading : This is my favorite book by America's best satirist, Sinclair Lewis, which I like even more than Elmer Gantry. In it he educated this white-skinned reader as to how it was not just slavery that subjugated what was then known as the American negro; nor was segregation something that was limited to the south. Even though he idealizes people of color, and some of the language is somewhat stilted, the effect of this book is akin to a kick in the gut, forcing even this progressive to reevaluate the effect that racism continues to have in our society. This is an astounding work by a brave man, and should be required reading in high-school history classes. ( Reviewed in the United States on December 30, 2012 )
• 4.0 out of 5 stars from DB361 -- how much and how little we have changed : Considered a minor and inferior novel compared to his best, it is "inferior" only in the sense that say, "Day Tripper" might be called an inferior Bealtes' single. Set immediately after WWII, it is the best kind of satire. That is, it seems wildly over the top that people's actions and attitudes toward race could be so ignorant, yet he is only, sadly, reporting on what people at the time actually believed and behaved. Like his "It can't Happen Here," about a greedy ignoramus who becomes President, it is unfortunately not merely a period piece. It is also prescient. ( Reviewed in the United States on May 12, 2007 )
• 5.0 out of 5 stars from Marion Stein -- Should be taught in high schools and colleges : What a gem this novel is. I don't have much to add as the other five stars cover it well. It's amazing what has changed and what hasn't. There's a lot to discuss here and I'd love to see more people having the conversation. Certainly, any educator putting together a curriculum relating to "white privilege" or American attitudes about race, or post-WW II relationships between whites and blacks in Northern cities, or other related topics, should include this book. It wasn't that long ago(and one could argue that it still happens) that having any African heritage made a person less. Sinclair Lewis was a master in showing up white bigots for what they were in those times and I dare say it's still going on today. A must read for everyone, black or white.
