:- 5.0 out of 5 stars from J. Alter -- An ambitious tale : In this ambitious entry in the China Bayles herbal mysteries, bestselling author Susan Witting Albert transports China to the mountains of North Carolina and involves her in the theft of a rare book, the discovery of a wounded man, an unsolved murder, a suicide, and a good old Smoky Mountain blizzard. Little did China know what she was getting into when she agreed to help a good friend locate a rare book missing form a collection in a secluded hideaway in the mountains--she even forgot her winter boots and parka. The missing book is an original copy of Elizabeth Blackwell's 18th century A Curious Herbal. What makes this book more ambitious than many mysteries is the braiding in of a novel about Blackwell's curious life and marriage. Albert obviously put a lot of research behind her story, yet she manages to keep it lively and readable. China's fans will be more than willing to follow her on this journey. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Pam -- Herbal history, Theft and murder, Ghostly happenings : Anytime I read a book in this series, China Bayles, by Susan Wittig Albert; I get an education in a very entertaining way. If you're interested in herbs and gardening along with the medicinal qualities, you'll certainly learn a lot. I was surprised about the use of hemlock (not the tree) and just how dangerous that can be. (Remember Socrates?) This book is of two parts. You will enjoy both. The historical part (Elizabeth Blackwell) and the present time with a theft and there's a murder investigation that China gets very involved with. Her good friend needs her help and China can't resist the challenge. Oh, there's a ghostly aspect too. I just can't figure out why the very intelligent China doesn't learn to respect Ruby's intuition or messages from the Universe, though. You'll see. Creepy old house, parrots, weather, poison, history; what's not to like? Read on and enjoy. ( Reviewed in the United States on September 20, 2021 )
- 2.0 out of 5 stars from Lee Wall -- Dry and repetitious : I have enjoyed this series in the past, but this one was very disappointing. There really isn’t much of a plot and the main character isn’t much of an investigator. She exhibits little insight and apparently needs to be told things more than once before they register. Instead of taking obvious steps - such as looking at online sellers for missing books - she spends time reading a student’s “novel” which is basically a slightly rewritten Wikipedia entry. The botanical and historical material is dry and very repetitious. ( Reviewed in the United States on September 13, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from J. M. Macomber -- Another winner : I have read the entire China Bayles series. It took me two days to finish this latest one. I live in Texas but grew up with snow, so I enjoyed the juxtaposition of spring and winter. Fearful for China's safety, I couldn't believe she opted to drive back up a mountain in a blizzard instead of staying at a B&B in town. I enjoyed the introduction of Spock the parrot and hope he returns in the next adventure. I want to see if he liked horseback riding enough to ask for his own horse! This is one of my favorite series, and Hemlock is one of my favorite books. There is always something to be learned, such as the differences between hemlock and Queen Anne's lace. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from FrequentBuyer -- Really enjoyed this book. Susan Wittig Albert still does it for me. : This seems to me to be very much in the same vein as other China Bayles books. Ms Albert has written several books that flipped between different eras. I enjoy her peripheral characters, and really like hearing the story in China’s voice. The definition of a cozy mystery - you get a glimpse into the lives of the supporting characters. ( Reviewed in the United States on September 12, 2021 )
- 4.0 out of 5 stars from L. S. Hardy -- Great Series Continues : Susan Wittig Albert knows how to keep a series Interesting, always introducing new characters and settings while allowing her continuing characters to be themselves, and Hemlock is no exception. This is the 28th China Boyles book and it is as fresh as the first, not having fallen into a formula as series often do. One does not have to read this series in order as each book can stand alone, but it is more fun to do so since it is like meeting up with old friends after a time apart. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from CHARKENN -- Bravo! : Hemlock is the best by far of the China Bayles mysteries! Susan weaves a complex who done it for several crimes along side of an historical novel written by one of the characters that is very interesting because it reveals information about the author of A Curious Herbal. Lots of wonderful facts about plants and Susan manages to include Ruby, McQuaid, and even China's pet parrot into the story line. ( Reviewed in the United States on September 11, 2021 )
